News, coverage and sentiment on a stock's page
On this page
Under a stock's chart and statistics are two news cards. Latest news lists the newest headlines about the company, and In the news measures the coverage: how much has been written, who and what appears in those stories, and whether the tone is positive or negative.
#Latest news
Latest news. Each story shows its outlet, its age and, where the index has read one, a Positive or Negative label.
- 1Outlet and age
- 2The index's reading of the article
- 3Opens the article on the outlet's own site
- 4The full News tab
Each story shows the outlet, how long ago it was published, and the first lines of the article. Select the headline to read it on the outlet's own site, which opens in a new tab. Small ticker chips under a story link to the other companies it mentions.
The list comes from the 4Search news index and is ranked for finance: stories from edited news outlets first, newest first, in English. The Overview shows ten; All AAPL news (using the page's own ticker) or the News tab shows the last 30 days.
A Positive or Negative label shows the tone of an article. Hover over it to see how it was decided: either the 4Search index's own reading of the article, or, where the index has none, a reading of the words in the headline. A story with no label has no clear tone.
On the News tab, the button at the bottom of the side column, Search all news for and the company's name, runs a News search for the company.
#In the news
The In the news card. The chart counts articles by day; the lists show what appears in them.
- 1How much coverage there is, and its sentiment
- 2Positive, neutral and negative articles
- 3Articles per day
- 4Names that appear in the same articles
- 5The outlets that wrote most
- mentions in 30 days: how many finance and business articles in the index name the company in the headline, or in the text beside its ticker.
- with it in the headline: how many of those have the company in the headline.
- sentiment: Positive, Mixed or Negative, with a bar that splits the articles into positive, neutral and negative. It is the index's own reading of the latest articles, and the note under the card says how many. It describes the tone of what has been written, not what the stock will do.
- The chart shows articles per day as bars, and the number with it in the headline as a line. Hover over a bar for the date and counts.
- Mentioned with lists other organizations that appear in the same articles. Select a company to open its page.
- People in the coverage lists people named in the stories. Select a name to search News for it.
- Themes lists the subjects of the coverage. Select one to search Finance for it.
- Most coverage from lists the outlets that wrote the most, with their article counts.
The same daily counts can be laid under the price chart: open Indicators on the chart and tick News volume (4Search). See Price charts.
#Common questions
Why does a headline have no Positive or Negative label?
Not every article has a tone the index could read, and a neutral story gets no label.
Does positive sentiment mean the stock will rise?
No. Sentiment describes the tone of recent coverage. It is not a forecast and not advice.
Can I see which companies the news is talking about most?
Yes. See In the news.
